Boots has continued its move into dental services with the launch of a second surgery, based in central Manchester.

The high street chain has partnered with Ocean Dental to open a dental practice at the Boots store on Market Street, which will provide services six days a week, the Manchester Evening News reported. dental implants london

A new ‘gas-firing’ device may offer a pain-free alternative to the dentist’s drill — and could make fillings even more hard-wearing.

Think body type or hair color is the most important feature in attracting a partner? Think again! A recent survey conducted by CosmaLite(TM) and founder, cosmetic dentist Dr. Steven Roth, suggests that a less-than-stellar smile is perhaps the greatest hindrance to finding romance.

The “Biggest Turn-off” dating survey revealed attributes that people find most appealing and least appealing in a romantic partner. When asked what they noticed first about potential partners, 62% of respondents said a person’s smile. Body type and eyes were tied at 12.5%, with fashion sense and complexion coming in at 6.3%

Respondents ranked facial attributes in order of importance as follows: teeth, number one by a landslide at 87.5%. Complexion, second at 66.7%, followed by eyes at 40%, nose at 33.3%, and hair color/style at 26.7%.

When asked what the biggest turn-off in a potential romantic partner is, bad breath topped the list at 31.3%, followed closely by yellow, crooked or missing teeth at 25%. Unattractive teeth are considered an even bigger turnoff than body odor (12.5%), lack of personality (18%), and unkempt appearance (12.5%).

NHS Dental budget to be cut

It has been revealed that up to a three month wait could be ahead for those people unable to afford private dental care as proposals suggest cutting millions from the NHS dental budget.

Oral healthcare of older patients remains a challenge says BDA

The quality and availability of oral healthcare for older adults remains an issue, and insufficient priority is being given to making improvements, the British Dental Association (BDA) has warned in a new report published today (10 January 2012).

The report says that many older adults’ health and wellbeing is under-served and that concerns remain about provision in the future. It also argues that oral health is often not properly considered in wider healthcare provision and, as a result, that many patients simply don’t get the care they need. Furthermore, the report warns, the aging demographic of the population of Britain means that new challenges will emerge; including a significant increase in demand for restorative dental treatment.

The report provides a progress check on 21 recommendations for improving oral care for older people published in a BDA report of 2003. Just six of those recommendations have been met in full, today’s report says. Amongst the challenges yet to be confronted are inadequate information about patient charge exemptions, the inability of dentists to prescribe artificial saliva except in certain circumstances and the continued absence of a commissioning framework that properly takes account of older patients’ needs.

Today’s report sets out twelve priorities for reform including the provision of free, comprehensive oral health assessments for over-60s, better integration of health and social services and the establishment of basic standards for care with which care homes should be obliged to comply….read more
