When to remove a wisdom tooth and what you should think about when deciding to have it removed.
The choice to have your wisdom teeth removed and when to have it done is a very important one that may affect the future of your dental health. Wisdom teeth (also known as Third Molars) may start to appear around the age of 17. It is recommended to have your wisdom teeth evaluated as soon as they appear or between the age of 17 and 19. Many times a cosmetic Dentist London will recommend having them removed if they pose a problem or may cause one later.
Many people do not have room for wisdom teeth. Lack of room would cause the tooth to push on other teeth and may cause them to grow in sideways or facing the cheek. Even with room, it still may be difficult to reach them to brush and clean. If not properly brushed they will develop cavities and/or gum disease as with any tooth.dental implants London
If the tooth comes through partially, only exposing an edge or corner, this would cause an eruption in the gum. A break in the gum would allow for small particles of food to become trapped in the pocket, which would later cause cyst or infections. An infection would cause further decay of the wisdom tooth. If this is the case, then the tooth should be removed immediately.
In other cases the tooth will not be exposed at all. The tooth would become what dentist call “impacted” and may cause pressure at the root of another tooth. The pressure to another tooth could then cause harm and destruction to the supporting bone. In time, further damage would be caused to surrounding teeth. Resent research suggests that over 80% of all people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth.
If you do decide to have your teeth removed, have them removed as soon as possible. Many dentists recommend having the teeth pulled before age 20 as the jaw and bone are still growing which makes extraction easier and healing will be more rapid. However the older you get, the more difficult it is to pull the tooth and the risk for nerve damage is also raised.
As with the risk of keeping your teeth, there are also risks for having them removed. After removal, pain and swelling will occur. Since the teeth are so close to the back of the jaw, soreness and pain may also occur when opening or closing your jaw. Removal may damage other dental work (bridges, crowns) as well as the root of a near by tooth.
There is still a strong standing debate on whether it is worth having the tooth removed before it causes trouble or to wait until it becomes bothersome…dental implants London Studies show there are many people out there with misaligned or impacted wisdom teeth have had no trouble at all. Most cases show that if the trouble doesn’t happen before age 30, that there should be no complication with the teeth in the future.
Here are some good reasons to have your wisdom teeth removed:
You have a medical condition that may get worse in the future and you do not wish to worry about a wisdom tooth.
You are going to have orthodontic work done and you don’t want your wisdom tooth to push any other teeth out of alignment.
You want to avoid any future dental problems.cosmetic dentist London
Your insurance covers the procedure and you may not have the option to remove them in the future.
You are young and removing them now would be easier and with less risk then removing them later.
You know you will not have enough room for them to come in.
Here are some good reasons to not have your wisdom teeth removed:
Your insurance does not cover the procedure.
You are over the age or 30 and have not had any issues with them so far. The risk of an issue in the future is small.
You wish to avoid damaging other cosmetic dental work with the removal.
You would rather wait for an issue to arise before trying to resolve it.
The choice to remove or not to remove is up to you. It’s all a matter of weighing the difficultly and pain in the extractions to the difficulty and pain of infections, cyst, and possible bone and gum damage. If you chose to have them removed, do so as soon as possible…read more

Recently, my youngest had a cosmetic dentist London appointment. It wasn’t unusual for him to be going there and it’s a place he actually really enjoys going. He’s been going since he was 3 — twice a year for a cleaning, fluoride treatment, complimentary toothbrush and a goody from the treasure chest. He hasn’t learned to fear the dentist like some adults who have had a number of bad dentist experiences, like root canals and extractions. All he knew was flavored fluoride and a little scraping of the teeth. What’s so bad about that?
But this last visit wasn’t for a routine cleaning. He was there for his first filling. Actually, for his first fillings. Yes, plural. Two. I was nervous going in. I knew what was coming. He didn’t.
I’ve always been conflicted about how much to tell the kids in advance when something like this is coming. On one hand, you want them to know what to expect. In another way, you don’t want them to know what’s coming and have it cause them fear and anxiety. I’ve done it both ways. Years ago, I’d tell the kids before we went to the doctor that shots were coming. It works with some kids. With others it doesn’t.
With one kid, I can tell him that he’s going to get some shots, but it will just be two and it will be quick and when it’s over the nurse will give him a sucker. cosmetic dentist London Then there’s no complaint or question. He goes with the flow. With another kid, I can say that shots are coming and it instills terror in him. I can’t get him out the door and I can’t get him into the doctor’s office without a big ordeal. So, what’s a parent to do?
Well, I didn’t really do either. I told him he had a cavity and we were going to the dentist so that he could fix it. It was kind of middle ground. He knew it would be something out of the ordinary, but he didn’t know it would involve Novocaine shots or a drill.
As usual, he was eager to go in. The dentist came out right away as he was in the numbing process and told me how amazed he was that he didn’t even flinch. At the end, the assistant came out to tell me how well he did and the dentist followed. Then he came out with a big swollen cheek…dental implants London.. He even seemed genuinely excited about the experience. He was fascinated with his numbed face. “I can’t feel my mouth,” he said. Then “I guess it feels like my mouth is getting a massage.” Then, “Hey, feel my face.” Then, “It feels weird. I think I feel like I have vampire teeth.”
He was a trooper. He took it way better than I expected. But, he has one more to go on the other side of his mouth. And this time he’ll know what’s coming…Read more

In fact some of them are so anxious about dental care that even the mention of the word “dentist” can spark an immediate sense of dread, researchers from Sydney University say.
The team, led by Special Needs Dentist Dr Avanti Karve, has been studying dental anxiety and phobia for five years. cosmetic dentist London
It found women in their 40s are most likely to report having experienced a traumatic dental experience in the past and are most likely to dread going to the cosmetic dentist London.
People who have suffered abuse, trauma and oro-facial trauma not related to dental treatment are also more likely to fear the dentist.
Despite advances in the dental practices, up to 40 per cent of the western population shudders at the thought of the dentist’s chair, Dr Karve said. dental implants London

According to ToothJewelry.com, the trend, which originated in Europe in 1986, began when a European dentist handcrafted tooth jewels made of 18K white and yellow gold. The idea emerged after a Swedish singer asked the cosmetic dentist London to put a diamond in her tooth. In order to insert the diamond per the singer’s request, the dentist would have to drill a cavity into her tooth, an unethical dental practice. Hence, the birth of tooth jewels.dental implants London
Since its beginnings in Europe, the tooth jewels have made their mark in the United States with celebrities such as P!nk rocking the sparkly style. dental implants London
Though this celebrity may have taken it to the next level, NY Magreported that Ke$ha got a real diamond implant in the enamel of her tooth. Well, it looks the same, right?
Tooth jewels can be applied with a DIY kit, or you can have them placed on your tooth professionally for a long-lasting look.
The DIY kit, DecoDenties, allows you to easily apply your new jewelry. All you have to do is brush your teeth, dry your tooth with a cotton swab, use a drop of adhesive and place it on a wax sheet, carefully pick up jewelry with a ”jewel handler” or tweezers and press the wax tip onto the front side of the jewel, put adhesive on the back of the jewel, place the jewel on your tooth of choice, and hold for 30 seconds. Try not to eat or drink for 45 minutes after applying the jewel. If you decide tooth jewels are not your style, don’t worry, as the tiny designs can easily be removed. MORE money is to be spent on increasing NHS dental places in North Cornwall before the end of this month to ensure waiting patients can be seen quickly.
NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly successfully bid for a share of £3.5 million of temporary funding to improve dental provision over the next two months. The Primary Care Trust is also adding money to the pot, improving access for 1,300 patients in total.
The money will be spent in the parts of Cornwall, such as Caradon, Restormel and North Cornwall, where existing NHS providers have capacity to provide more appointments.cosmetic dentist london
Saltash and Penzance, which already have funding allocated for waiting patients, continue to work to reduce waiting lists that built up after the loss of previous providers.
The investment comes as the latest GP patient survey shows Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly having good rates of access to dentistry. Some 91 per cent of respondents were successful in getting an NHS dental appointment last time they tried. Some 81 per cent ranked their overall dental implants london experience of NHS dentistry as being “very good” or “fairly good.”
Bridget Sampson, deputy director for primary care at NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, which commissions all healthcare services in response to local health needs, said: “We work hard to ensure that we cosmetic dentist london continually provide equitable access to NHS dentistry.
“We have introduced new providers in areas where there is a shortage of dentists due to people retiring or leaving the NHS and waiting lists have quickly built up.dental implants london
“This new cash is welcome and will be used to ensure other areas can also benefit from offering additional appointments to meet demand. We also hope to be in a position soon to announce our plans for further increasing capacity in the new financial year.”..read more

read moreTo most parents, there are few things more precious than their children’s smiles. Unfortunately, those toothy little grins are increasingly afflicted by decay, requiring dental surgery.
The number of preschool children needing cosmetic dentist london treatment for multiple cavities is on the rise, according to The New York Times. Dentists told the newspaper they’ve noticed a spike in young children (across income levels) with six to 10 cavities or more.
“We have had a huge increase in kids going to the operating room,” pediatric dentist Jonathan Shenkin, a spokesman for the American Dental Association, told the Times. “We’re treating more kids more aggressively earlier.”
The dentists interviewed by the newspaper offered many reasons for the problem, including sweet drinks and snacks before bedtime, parents giving children bottled water instead of fluoridated tap water, and a lack of awareness among parents about proper dental care for children.cosmetic dentist london
Some parents, for instance, don’t insist that their toddlers brush their teeth if the children dislike it. Others mistake the aches associated with dental decay for teething, and still others don’t know that infants should see a dentist before their first birthday, even if they don’t have many teeth.
A major issue with dental surgery for preschool children is that extensive procedures often require the use of general anesthesia, as young patients are unlikely able to sit through them, the Times reports. However, using general anesthesia on children can be risky, leading to vomiting and nausea and even brain damage or death in extremely rare cases.dental implants london
In Canada, tooth decay, or early childhood caries, is the most common childhood disease, according to the Canadian Dental Association. And dental surgery, dental implants london, under general anesthesia, is the most common day surgery procedure at most pediatric hospitals in the country.
The association recommends that parents check their toddler’s teeth carefully once a month for dull white spots or lines, and look for dark teeth. At any of these signs of tooth decay, they should bring children to the dentist right away. All children under the age of three should have an adult brush their teeth. Between the ages of three and six, adults should supervise.
Younger infants should not be given milk, formula or juice at bedtime, and should see a dentist within six months of the emergence of their first tooth, or by age one….read more

read moreI get asked that question often, and to be honest, I understand why patients feel that way. When a friend of mine, a savvy businessman learned about the business of dentistry he was actually surprised it didn’t cost more! He suggested that I share the hidden side of modern dental care.
First, good dental care costs a lot to provide. Just a few weeks ago a woman in Italy died because she developed legionnaire’s disease after dental treatment. The culprit was bacteria growing in a dental water line. This office in Italy missed something when it comes to infection control.
We never want to miss anything.
Every piece of dental equipment in a dental office is maintained to strict standards. That water that comes out of the dental units, is first steam distilled and then treated to prevent any bacteria or viruses from forming a film in the water lines. Instruments are cleaned in ultrasonic baths, packaged and autoclaved between each use. Suction machines are disinfected and treated to prevent the spread of disease. The autoclaves are monitored by an outside agency to verify and document their effectiveness. X-ray machines are calibrated and tested by the appropriate regulatory agencies annually. Treatment rooms are disinfected between each use. Team members update their CPR and emergency preparedness drills on a regular basis. All of this attention to patient health and safety takes employee time and costs money.
Dental equipment costs have skyrocketed with the increase in technologies used in dentistry today. It is not uncommon for an average size office equipped with latest technology to have nearly a million dollars invested in the equipment alone. While a few patients have joked that they have paid for my new kitchen – the reality is that they have helped pay for the equipment we used to make their visit quick and comfortable. My kitchen is still ugly.dental implants london
Dental laboratory costs: dental lab work includes crowns, bridges, dentures, partials, and any other devices or appliances that are custom fabricated for a patient. Lab work is handmade. Each crown is made specifically for the individual patient. It takes days of painstaking work to get it just right. Included in the cost of dentistry are the fees incurred to pay these behind the scenes technicians who custom make all of this dental work. There are differing laboratory costs depending on the materials used and if the crown is made in the United States or sent overseas. Yes, there are lots of dentists (not me) who send crowns to China. I personally only use US labs with FDA approved materials. dental implants london If you are curious, ask your dentist. Some of these materials contain precious metals, so the lab costs tend to fluctuate with the gold market. Needless to say if your dentist is contracted for set fees by an insurance carrier (a PPO network plan) they have been feeling the pinch since their costs have gone way up but their reimbursement has not.
Dentistry is an art and science, not a commodity. It is not mass produced. While a patient may have been in the office for 60 minutes for a crown preparation, the dental team spent additional time working on the impressions, making models, disinfecting the impressions, preparing them for transport to the lab and communicating with the lab. Some offices may spend an additional 40 -60 minutes working on a case long cosmetic dentist london after the patient leaves the office. This attention to detail takes time and costs money.
We keep UPS and FedEx in business. Inventory including supplies, materials, disposables, and instruments must be maintained, reordered, unpackaged, stored and kept ready for use. Every item in a dental office is ordered and delivered. Dental offices pay shipping charges on virtually everything they use. cosmetic dentist london Dental materials are more expensive than you might think. When you include the anesthetic, the disposables, the filling materials and everything else that is needed, even a tiny restoration may require more than $75.00 in materials. Add a dental assistant, a front desk person to schedule an appointment and the cost of the equipment and the facility and suddenly it is easy see why dental care costs more than you think it should.
Every dentist works hard to balance the expense in providing quality care with the need to keep fees under control.
The next time you think your dentist is charging too much, maybe they are just doing it just right….read more

Dentists, dental nurses and dental hygienists may be asked to play a leading role as part of new proposals to stop the use of smokeless tobacco1 in the UK. NICE have published a consultation on their proposals, which recommends a key intervention and education role for dental professionals.cosmetic dentist london
NICE is also recommending more training for dental professionals to help them gain a greater understanding of smokeless tobacco including terminology, symptoms and approaches to successful intervention.
Smokeless tobacco is associated with a dental implants london number of health problems including nicotine addiction, mouth and oral cancer2, periodontal disease, heart attacks and strokes, problems in pregnancy and following childbirth and late diagnosis of dental problems as smokeless tobacco products can often mask pain. Smokeless tobacco is mainly used by ‘people of South Asian origin’, which includes people with ancestral links to Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan or Sri Lanka.dental implants london
The draft guidance3 recommends that dental professionals take specific actions including:
• Asking patients about their smokeless tobacco use and record the outcome in their patient notes.
• Making users aware of the potential health risks and advise them to stop, using a brief intervention.
• Referring users who want to quit the habit to tobacco cessation services that use counsellors trained in behavioural support.
• Recording the person’s response to any attempts to encourage or help them to stop using smokeless tobacco in the patient notes.cosmetic dentist london

read moreMouth cancer cases in the UK are set to rise by nearly a quarter by 2030, according to cancer researchers.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer1 predicts that a little under 8,000 new cases of mouth cancer will be diagnosed each year in the UK by 2030, an increase of 23 per cent compared to 2008.
Mortality rates for head and neck cancer are also set to increase to over 2,700, nearly 29 per cent higher than in 2008 (2,134 deaths).
As the risks for mouth cancer are entirely lifestyle related, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, said the onus on reversing the projected increase lies within the population.cosmetic dentist london
Dr Carter said: “The forecasted rise in mouth cancer incidence and mortality rates should be of concern to us all. Lifestyle choices that put health at risk are entirely preventable, and patients need to be educated on what the risks are.
“In the past mouth cancer was a disease which predominately affected males over 40 but this is no longer necessarily true. Women and younger people are increasingly at risk and our general attitudes to drinking, smoking and diet is a cause for concern.
“Tobacco use remains the largest cause of mouth cancer, and we have seen alcohol-related admissions to hospital pass cosmetic dentist london the one million mark for the first time.
“Indulging in a poor diet and the emergence of the sexually transmitted infection the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) are further lifestyle behaviours that are known risk factors for mouth cancer. The changing demographics of mouth cancer sufferers mean more people than ever before need to be aware of what these risk factors are.”
If people persist in living a risky lifestyle, it is really important that patients are told the warning signs for mouth cancer. By doing this, survival rates are dramatically improved. One in two people diagnosed with mouth cancer die without early diagnosis. However, early detection of the disease can improve five year survival rates to 90 per cent.
Dr Carter said: “Between check-ups encouraging patients to look for ulcers which do not heal within three weeks, red and white patches in the mouth and unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth could be life-saving. If you find any of these symptoms during a check-up, it is best to arrange a referral for the patient to remove any doubt.dental implants london
